The good news is that you do not need to spend a single coin to get your first fishing rod. During the early hours of the game, after you arrive in Hernand and complete the introductory mercenary contracts, speak with the old fisherman sitting on the dock near the southern river bridge. He will give you the quest "A Line in the Water," which rewards you with a Basic Wooden Rod completely free of charge. This rod is perfectly serviceable for catching common and uncommon fish throughout the first two regions of the game, so there is no rush to upgrade. If you somehow miss this quest, you can also find a broken rod in a barrel behind the Hernand fish market stall and repair it at any blacksmith for a trivial material cost.

Once you have a rod in your inventory, approach any body of water that shows the fishing icon when you stand near the shore. Rivers, lakes, ponds, and even certain coastal areas all support fishing. Open water that appears deep enough will generally work, but shallow puddles and contaminated swamp pools will not. After your lure lands, you enter the Hook phase. Watch for a sharp tug on your line indicated by a visual splash effect and a controller vibration or audio cue. You have a narrow timing window of roughly half a second to press the hook button. Hitting it too early or too late results in a miss, and the fish escapes. Upgrading your rod or using better bait extends this timing window slightly, making hooks more forgiving. Once you successfully hook a fish, the Fight phase begins. A circular tension gauge appears on screen. The fish will pull in random directions, and you need to tilt your analog stick or press directional keys to counter its movement while keeping the tension gauge in the green zone. Let it enter the red zone for too long and the line snaps. Let it drop to zero and the fish shakes free.

The final Reel phase activates once the fish is tired out. You rapidly press the reel button to bring it in. To even attempt legendary fish, you need the Porin Rod, a special upgraded fishing rod obtained by completing the quest chain that starts with "The Old Man and the Deep" in Pailune. Each legendary fish has a unique Fight pattern that lasts between ninety seconds and three minutes. The Abyssal Leviathan Eel is widely considered the hardest catch in the game, as it re-enters the Fight phase four times and moves in erratic patterns. Legendary fish can be displayed as trophies in your camp, sold for enormous sums, or cooked into the most powerful food buffs available.

Hand-Fishing in Shallow Water

Not all fishing in Crimson Desert requires a rod. In shallow streams, tide pools, and riverbanks, you can engage in hand-fishing by wading into the water and watching for fish shadows. When you spot a shadow, approach slowly without sprinting, as running through shallow water scares fish away for about thirty seconds. Once you are close enough, a grab prompt appears. The timing on hand-fishing is actually tighter than rod fishing, as you have roughly a third of a second to react. Successfully grabbing a fish yields the catch instantly with no Fight or Reel phase. Hand-fishing is an excellent way to gather basic cooking fish quickly without wearing down your rod's durability. It is also the only way to catch Freshwater Crawfish, a small crustacean found in Hernand and Demeniss streams that is required for several cooking recipes and one alchemist quest.

Cooking with Fish: Best Recipes

Fish are among the most versatile cooking ingredients in Crimson Desert. The simplest recipe is Grilled Fish, which requires any common fish and a campfire. Grilled Fish restores a moderate amount of health and is one of the most weight-efficient healing items in the early game. Moving up in complexity, the Fisherman's Stew combines any two different fish types with Wild Onion and Salt to produce a dish that regenerates health over time and provides a fifteen-minute cold resistance buff, invaluable in the Demeniss mountain regions. The Stamina Recovery Stew mentioned earlier requires Blue-Stripe Eel, Mountain Herb, and Butter, and grants a significant stamina regeneration boost for twenty minutes. For end-game content, the Abyssal Feast uses Crystal Koi or Abyssal Catfish combined with Moonstone Salt and Royal Spices to create a dish that boosts all combat stats by ten percent for thirty minutes, making it the go-to pre-boss meal for serious players.

Tips and Tricks
