How to Beat Hexe Marie: Follower of Darkness Boss Guide

Date Published

Hexe Marie is one of Crimson Desert's most distinctive bosses — an ancient dark sorceress who commands impossible numbers of crows and raises skeleton minions to fight alongside her. Her lore connection to Black Desert Online's Hexe Marie gives this encounter special weight for returning Pearl Abyss fans, but even newcomers will find her one of the most visually spectacular and mechanically interesting fights in the game. The Raventine Monastery setting — a crow-haunted ruin filled with skeletal remains — perfectly frames this encounter.

Hexe Marie's Background and Lore

Hexe Marie is an ancient entity who nearly died as a child when accused of witchcraft and almost burnt alive. The experience drove her to pursue the most forbidden magical arts, eventually breaking taboos by infusing pure darkness into her own child — a ritual that granted her heretical power over death and shadow but also transformed her into something no longer fully human. She arrived in Pywel centuries ago and has maintained a presence at the Raventine Monastery for generations, amassing a following of corrupted crows that carry her will across the region.

Phase 1 — Crow Teleportation

Hexe Marie opens the fight by teleporting via crow transformation — she dissolves into a flock of crows, reforms elsewhere in the arena, and immediately casts. The key to Phase 1 is not tracking her position visually but listening for the distinctive 'crow call' sound effect that plays 0.5 seconds before she reforms. Position yourself at the arena center during teleportation phases and watch for the crow swarm condensing. When it condenses in one spot, immediately dodge toward that spot — you will be in melee range when she reforms instead of out of position.

Phase 2 — Skeleton Summoning

Phase 2 begins when Hexe Marie's HP reaches approximately 60%. She summons two to three Skeleton Warriors that fight alongside her and must be managed simultaneously. Critical rule: focus the skeletons immediately when summoned, not Hexe Marie. Her skeleton-amplification aura makes skeletons deal double damage while she is casting — killing them within five seconds of summoning prevents this damage spike. Hammer or other Blunt weapons are optimal here since Blunt deals bonus damage against undead. After clearing skeletons, return to the Phase 1 crow-tracking strategy against Hexe Marie.

Phase 3 — Combined Assault

Phase 3 (below 30% HP) combines continuous crow swarm attacks with skeleton summoning and a new crow dive bomb move — multiple large crows dive from the arena ceiling in sequence, each creating a ground shockwave on landing. The crow dives are telegraphed by shadow circles appearing on the ground. Dodge through them (not away) and use the post-dodge window to attack Hexe Marie if she is nearby. Keep Mantle of Frost active in Phase 3 — the Freeze status interrupts both her skeleton summoning cast animation and her crow transform teleport, buying critical windows of direct attack access.

Strategy Summary and Rewards

Recommended loadout: Hammer for undead skeleton bonus damage, Mantle of Frost active throughout, and at least two Spirit Gauge Restore potions. Use Parry-Counter against her melee strikes, prioritize skeleton clearing immediately on summoning, listen for the crow call teleport sound, and dodge through crow dive shadows in Phase 3. Her Observation Learning opportunity occurs during the crow teleport animation in Phase 2 — hold the observation button during one of her teleport phases to bank a technique that later unlocks a unique shadow dash ability. Defeating Hexe Marie drops rare dark magic reagents and a key item for the Raventine Monastery questline.

Before entering the Hexe Marie boss arena, make sure you have at least three Purification Elixirs in your inventory, as her curse debuffs can stack rapidly and drain your health over time. Equipping accessories with curse resistance is highly recommended, with the Ward Pendant from the Demeniss side quest being the single best option available. Additionally, having an animal companion with high aggro capability helps immensely during her summoning phases, as the companion can distract the shadow minions while you focus damage on Marie herself.

During the second phase when Marie begins teleporting between the floating platforms, resist the urge to chase her aggressively. Instead, position yourself centrally and wait for her to commit to one of her three telegraphed attack patterns. The overhead slam has the longest recovery window and is your best opportunity to close distance and land a full combo. Patience is the key to this fight, as players who overextend consistently get punished by her quick counterattack that deals massive damage and applies a slowing curse.
