Crimson Desert Map Size Explained: How Pywel Compares to Skyrim and RDR2

Date Published

Crimson Desert's world map is one of the largest in action RPG history. The continent of Pywel is confirmed to be approximately twice the size of Skyrim's map and larger than the already-massive Red Dead Redemption 2 open world. This is not empty land padding — Pywel is densely populated with over 400 missions, 110 factions, 76+ boss encounters, and countless points of interest across five distinct regions plus the supernatural Abyss realm. Understanding the map's geography helps players prioritize their exploration efficiently.

The Five Regions of Pywel

Hernand — The Green Starting Region

Hernand occupies the western portion of Pywel and is defined by rolling grasslands, dense forests like Redfox Forest, and river valleys. It contains the game's highest density of tutorial content, early quests, and life skill unlock locations. Key sub-locations include the City of Hernand (the largest Hernand settlement), Greymane Camp (player base), Roothold, Deepfog Basin, Unicorn Cliffs, and Hernand Castle. Hernand's size is comparable to Skyrim's Whiterun Hold — substantial but navigable.

Pailune — The Northern Mountain Territory

Pailune covers the northern mountain range of Pywel, featuring perpetual snow, Viking-style architecture, and the Black Bear occupation that drives the early main story. Its verticality is extreme — cliffs, peaks, and mountain passes require the full traversal toolkit including Double Jump and Crow Wings gliding. Kweiden, White Mountains, Savage Peaks, and Frozen Soul Mountain spread across considerable vertical territory. Cross-region travel from Hernand to the deepest Pailune areas takes roughly 8-12 real-world minutes on horseback.

Demeniss — The Political Capital

Demeniss is the medieval urban center of Pywel — the continent's largest city and military staging ground. It is more densely built than any other region, featuring fortress districts, noble estates, military encampments, and the royal palace where the comatose king lies. The Alfonso Estate and Calphade sub-region sit on the border with Hernand. Demeniss features some of the game's largest siege-battle setpieces. The city itself is larger than Novigrad from The Witcher 3.

Delesyia — The Steampunk Coastal Region

Delesyia occupies the southeastern coastal area and is visually unlike anything else in Pywel — mechanical constructs, industrial facilities, harbors full of steam-powered ships, and the sprawling Marni's Masterium research complex. It is the game's most vertically built environment, with multi-story mechanical towers and elevated walkways. Delesyia is the destination for the game's most spectacular boss fights including the Golden Star mechanical dragon.

The Crimson Desert — The Vast Arid Expanse

The Crimson Desert is the game's namesake and arguably its largest region by raw surface area. Its red sand dunes, sandstone canyons, and scattered oasis settlements create a dramatically different traversal experience — horses tire faster in sand, heat shimmer affects visibility at distance, and the Desert Cult patrols aggressively. The Bonepit arena is buried beneath the desert sands. True to its name, the desert rewards exploration with some of the rarest crafting materials and the highest concentration of Abyss Artifacts outside of the Abyss itself.

The Abyss — The Sixth Realm

The Abyss is not a conventional geographic region — it is a supernatural parallel realm of floating islands accessible through mystical gates scattered across Pywel. Its size is difficult to quantify since it exists in another dimension, but its island chains contain content comparable in scope to a smaller region. The Library of Providence and the White Crow encounter are located here, and the Abyss has the highest density of Abyss Artifacts per unit of area in the game.

How to Cross the Map Efficiently

At launch, Pywel has no fast travel system in the traditional sense — mounted travel is the primary method. A horse with high Speed and Stamina stats and full Barding equipment crosses from Hernand to the Crimson Desert in approximately 15-20 minutes of real time. Liberation points across each region unlock regional fast travel nodes once freed — liberating all strategic points in a region effectively creates a fast travel network within that region. The Crow Wings gliding ability also provides rapid descents from elevated positions, cutting cross-terrain travel time significantly in mountainous areas.

How Regions Connect

The seamless open world design means that all three major regions connect organically through mountain passes, river valleys, and underground cavern networks. Unlike many open world games that use loading screens to transition between biomes, Crimson Desert renders the entire map as a continuous space. This design choice has a meaningful gameplay impact, as players can observe distant landmarks from almost anywhere and use visual navigation rather than relying solely on the minimap.

The verticality of the map is another dimension that sets Crimson Desert apart from its peers. The Demeniss Highlands feature dramatic elevation changes that affect both exploration and combat encounters. Enemies positioned on higher ground gain damage bonuses, and certain traversal abilities like the Grapple Hook and Wind Dash are essential for reaching elevated areas that contain some of the best loot in the game. Players who only explore at ground level will miss a substantial amount of content hidden in the upper reaches of each region.

Frequently Asked Questions
